Description

The route leads east from the Riffelalp station. The trail leads through the Swiss stone pine forest below the "Laubern" rock band in the direction of Grünsee. The path branches off sharply to the right in the middle of the small alpine meadows and leads slightly higher up back towards Riffelalp. Here you cross the tracks of the Gornergrat Bahn, which has been transporting guests to the excursion mountain since 1898.

After around 2 kilometers, the trail passes above the Riffelalp Resort. The Grandhotel Riffelalp, which made a name for itself as the "playground of European high society", once stood here. In February 1961, a fire destroyed the hotel - the Berghotel Riffelalp was only reopened at the end of the 1980s. At the turn of the millennium, it was converted into the 5-star Riffelalp Resort.

Here, the fantastic view of the Matterhorn and various restaurants invite you to linger. The way back to Riffelalp station follows the tracks of the historic Riffelalp Tram, the highest tramway in Europe.
