Description

Shortly after the Rotenboden railway station, the view opens up to the Riffelsee. After about 15 minutes, you reach the first high point of this hike, the idyllic mountain lake with its famous Matterhorn reflection. From there, the path leads downhill directly towards the Matterhorn. The unique view of the numerous four-thousanders always amazes even the regular mountain hiker. Those looking out for different alpine flowers may also spot the iconic Swiss Edelweiss with some luck. With the Matterhorn in front of you, the very beautiful hiking trail laid out in open terrain branches off after about 30 minutes northwestwards with a view towards the Weisshorn. The path now runs gently, slightly downhill through meadows and a small forest to Riffelalp. Riffelalp is a historic alp; the Riffelalp hotel was already built here in 1884. Numerous celebrities stayed here before the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1961. Almost forty years later, the new Riffelalp Resort 2222 was created here. A remnant of the past is, for example, the highest tram in Europe, which reopened in 2001 and was faithfully rebuilt between the hotel and the railway station. From Riffelalp, the flat path leads you through the beautiful Swiss stone pine forest to the Riffelalp station.

Check before beginning your hike whether the path is open.
